The VR training simulator demonstrates a correct approach to three key hygiene practices for healthcare workers: hand washing (hand hygiene, hand scrubs) , putting on (donning), and taking off (doffing) personal protective equipment (PPE). Motion capture examines each movement of a trainee and helps the VR application to determine an accuracy of the exercise performance.

PPE Training Simulator is intended to promote patient safety and improve the healthcare work environment’s safety through advanced implementation of personal protective equipment (PPE) by healthcare workers.
We developed this technology to simplify the staff training process through incorporating VR to educate employees three critical steps: hand washing (hand hygiene, hand scrubs), putting on (donning), and taking off (doffing) personal protective equipment (PPE).
In the era of global pandemics, the VR PPE training is imperative, as current studies have proven that approximately 40% of healthcare practitioners make mistakes when removing PPE, putting them at risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19 or other viruses and bacteria.
The contamination of medical workers is one of the most acute problems for medical institutions. Numerous studies show that although PPE donning and doffing are basic practices, many health professionals perform them incorrectly. As a result, even perfectly designed Personal Protective Equipment items can’t protect the HCW.
Above all, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian Hospital (2017) discovered that healthcare personnel contaminated themselves in almost 80 percent of the PPE simulations. The most contaminated areas for both full-body and simple sets were hands and fingers followed by arm-wrist and face. The same findings were confirmed by the complex study for Clinical Infectious Diseases Journal.
Moreover, a clinical study has found evidence of healthcare workers (HCW) who have been contaminated because of improper donning and doffing practices. The only way to solve this issue is to held training, but they often take a back seat in the US ICUs because of shrinking budgets and lack of time.
The consequence of such an irresponsible attitude to the process of undressing healthcare workers was a high level of Ebola infection in 2014. Similarly, we have such a situation during the coronavirus pandemic. If there’s one silver lining to the Covid-19 panic, it’s that it brought more attention to the need for proper PPE and training in the United States.
We developed 3-step immersive training that involves:
Hand hygiene is the first step of our PPE VR Training. It is based on CDC guidelines and provides washing hands with soap and water for at least 1 minute. The VR training contains 14 steps and helps clean hands precisely, mainly to wash such problem areas as between fingers or around nails. In addition, our simulator involves the usage of motion capture technology and gloves with controllers for very accurate hand recognition and the ability to provide users with a life-like experience. Above all, motion sensors record every movement and check how accurately and correctly steps of handwashing are performed. In case of a mistake, the app signals about it and shows the proper way.
The next stage is PPE donning, which involves the correct performing of gowning and gloving. Our PPE VR simulator shows and then verifies in which order you perform putting on key personal protective equipment: isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator, face shield, and gloves. We understand that in many cases, donning and doffing the PPE requires up to 35 separate steps and assistance to ensure it’s appropriately done. However, we’re always open to customizing this VR simulator according to your needs.
Doffing is considered the last and most significant stage of PPE due to the high risks of contamination. There are several alternatives to removing and disposing of protective equipment to prevent skin, clothes, or membranes from infecting. PPE VR Simulator teaches HCW to don PPE in such order: gloves, face shield, gown, and respirator. The last step is to wash hands properly. This doffing approach is based on the CDC guides, but we’re ready to design this practice according to your internal procedure.
